The movie 300, directed by Zack Snyder and released in 2006, was inspired by the story of Leonidas, Spartan king who knew how to be one of the most important of all time in this Greek polis, ruling in the 5th century BC. c.
Already located in time, with respect to space, we must say that Sparta grew along with other relevant cities such as Athens, Thebes and Corinth, so this is a great opportunity to learn new details of its existence.
One of the Greek heroes, Leonidas
The king of the Persians, Xerxes I it had begun to prepare the invasion of Greece around the year 490 a. C. who had the exiled Spartan king Demarato among his court.
the greek cops they consulted the Oracle of Delphi and he was warned that, according to the Greek historian Herodotus, the king of Sparta would either die during the battle or be conquered. No Spartan monarch had perished in combat.
Despite being especially related to Sparta, all of Ancient Greece knew how to surrender to Leonidas. His heroic role during the Medical Wars made him a cult figure to this day.
Born in 540 B.C. C. and fourth son of King Anaxandridas II, Leonidas was not monarch until 485/488 BC. C. By then he was an old man -according to the life expectancy of the time-, and few trusted his abilities.
The Persians planned to conquer Greece, and the Oracle at Delphi warned that if Leonidas survived the war, it would mean that Sparta had fallen. Until then, no Spartan king had died in combat.
This character was key to the formation of the Hellenic Leaguean alliance of the main Greek towns commanded by Sparta and himself, and that is how his greatest feat took place, the Battle of Thermopylae.
Nearly 60 years old, he led an army of about 6,000 soldiers, surpassed several times by the Persians. He managed to resist the advance of the Achaemenid Empire and, just as the Oracle had warned, he gave up his life so that thousands of Greeks could be saved. The following year, the Persian invasion would be definitively repelled at Plataea.
That is why he is considered one of the most transcendent men of the origin of modern Greece.
The Greeks successfully resisted the Persian attack for several days, until they began to find themselves surrounded by the enemy. According to Herodotus, Leonidas allowed many of the Greek soldiers to retreat for their lives, but he decided to stay because of his character as a king and a Spartan.
