France renews call for release of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny

France on Wednesday expressed its “concern” over the new trial that began in Russia against the imprisoned dissident Alexei NavalnyReiterating the demand for his immediate and unconditional release.

“We are concerned about the launch of new legal proceedings by the Lefortovo Court in Moscow against dissident and anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny,” said French Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Anne-Claire Legendre.

She recalled that “the European Court of Human Rights has considered that Navalny did not benefit from fair trials in previous cases, so we will remain vigilant about the conduct of this procedure and whether international standards will be respected during it.”

She added that France renews its demand for the release of Mr Navalny Immediately and without conditions.

On Tuesday, Navalny opened a new trial on fraud charges, in which he faces up to an additional 10 years in prison.

In a second case, Navalny faces up to six months in prison for “insulting” a Russian judge during a hearing last year. Both cases are being heard before the same court.

Navalny, 45, was previously sentenced to two and a half years in prison in February 2021 in a fraud case that he considered politicized and fabricated.

In his new trial, investigators accuse Alexei Navalny of embezzling more than $4.1 million in donations to his political organizations for personal purposes.

The Russian dissident is currently serving his sentence in a prison complex in Pokrov, 100 km east of Moscow.
